The Southern Tip Hike (Angeria-Kastelovouni-Trypiti-Alyki)
A demanding hike for seasoned walkers, traversing impressive, rugged coastline & pristine beaches, with the right touch of hiking on the southern hills. Dirt roads & shepherds’ trails, unmarked rocky footpaths by the water, splendid sea (and sunset) views, great swimming! Longer, circular route available.
Level: Demanding
Description We meet outside Aghios Georgios, the main church of quaint Angeria, just off the bus stop. We start walking uphill though the village alleys and find ourselves on the old hillside footpath to Kamari, with great views to Alyki bay and beyond and After an mildly uphill ascent on dirt road on Kastelovouni hill, we gain elevation walking on old footpaths and hunters’ trails, in an idyllic hilly area, among age-old ‘pezoules’ (terraced hillside fields) with fragrant thyme, sage, cistus and lentisk bushes, as well as a few old olive trees. As we traverse the hillsides, we enjoy magnificent sea views to the W-SW (as far as Santorini on a clear day) and Paros hills and mountains to the north. After we cross over to Trypiti hill, we go on a rough & stony shepherds’ trail up and down the juniper-wooded hillside, enjoying great sea views as we approach the water.
Next, walking along rugged, stony, coastline footpaths, we go by impressive vertical cliffsides: the rocky Pirate’s Cove with its turquoise waters and the roofless sea-cave before the discreet beach of Trypiti. This golden-sanded beach makes the perfect location for a stop for a refreshing sea dip and a picnic break in the tree shade! Scrambling on rough, unmarked trails, we continue along the spectacular coast where small sandy coves alternate with massive, white marble slabs, all the way to Farangas beach. On a sunny day, the golden sands and turquoise waters beckon us to stay longer!
We continue our exploration of the lace-like coastline to Alyki on mostly unmarked rocky trails (easier alternative route available). As we move W-SW on a late afternoon return to Alyki, we may also get splendid sunset views over the Antiparos channel, watching the sun sink behind the hilly silhouette of Antiparos island. When we finally reach the Piso Alyki beach, we have two options: either swim and lounge by the crystal-clear water or move on to the centre of Alyki village for coffee/refreshments and the bus/transportation to Parikia.
As a circular alternate route, this can be extended to a 15-km hillside & coastal hike starting from and ending at Angeria, skipping Piso Alyki beach as we walk uphill to Angeria on dirt road and in a dry river bed (+3km, 5h30).
